Gasherbrum II Expedition

The registration for the 2024-25 Gasherbrum II Expedition is now accessible. Gasherbrum II Expedition offers a remarkable opportunity to conquer the 8,035-meter peak nestled in Pakistan's Karakoram mountain range. Gasherbrum II presents an excellent challenge for those aspiring to summit their inaugural 8,000-meter peak.

The mountain Gasherbrum II/G2, sometimes referred to as K4, is 8,035 meters (26,362 feet) above sea level, making it the thirteenth highest mountain in the world. Situated in the Karakoram range, this mountain is the third-highest peak in the Gasherbrum massif. It marks the border between Xinjiang, China, and Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan. Fritz Moravec, Josef Larch, and Hans Willenpart led an Austrian expedition team that made the first climb of the mountain on July 7, 1956.

Situated in the neighborhood of K2 and Broad Peak in the Karakoram mountain range of Pakistan, Gasherbrum II is the thirteenth tallest mountain on Earth. The Gasherbrum II Expedition is regarded as the simplest and most secure route up The Karakoram's 8,000-meter peaks. It shares the same base camp and is a component of the Gasherbrum massif. Mountaineers who wish to try Gasherbrum I–II must pay an extra royalty charge.

Gasherbrum II Expedition 2024-25

Our Gasherbrum II Expedition commences from Islamabad, the closest international airport for embarking on an adventure holiday in Pakistan's Karakoram mountains. Upon arrival, our representative will warmly welcome you at Islamabad International Airport and transport you to the group hotel. Take some well-deserved rest to recover from your long flight, and later in the evening, we'll convene over dinner to provide you with a detailed briefing about your upcoming Gasherbrum II Expedition. You'll spend the night in Islamabad.

The following day, you'll embark on a breathtaking 45-minute mountain-view flight to Skardu, Baltistan. During this flight, you'll witness stunning sights, including the magnificent Nanga Parbat, K2, and other remarkable Himalayan & Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan. Upon reaching Skardu, check into your hotel and enjoy a free afternoon for preparations. Skardu serves as the capital of Baltistan and acts as a gateway to prominent peaks like K2, Deosai Plato, Broad Peak, Masherbrum, Gasherbrums, Pastore Peak, among others. Here, trekkers and climbers usually make final purchases for their mountain expeditions.

Following a two-day stay in Skardu, your journey will lead you along the Indus, Shigar, and Braldu rivers until you reach Askoli. This village marks the last settlement before venturing into the wilderness of the Karakoram. Spend your initial night camping under the starry sky. The next morning, your trekking adventure commences as you head towards Braldu Gorge and the Baltoro glacier's snout, eventually reaching Concordia. Concordia stands as the heart of the Karakoram, offering breathtaking views of K2, Broad Peak, and other Karakoram giants.

Gasherbrum II's base camp is a 5-6 hour walk from Concordia, positioned at the junction of the Godwin Austen glacier and Baltoro glacier. The base camp lies just below the Conway Saddle and serves as the initial route for reaching several major Karakoram peaks. Your climbing journey for Gasherbrum II will begin from here. Throughout your climbing period, you'll camp at the Gasherbrum base camp, accompanied by our mountain guide, chef, and support staff. Following the climbing phase, you'll follow the same itinerary back to Islamabad.

As an optional return trip, you may traverse the 5600-meter Gondogoro La and experience the beautiful green Hushe Valley before returning to Skardu. Spend a night in Skardu and, weather permitting, take a flight back to Islamabad. After another night in Islamabad, we'll arrange your transfer to Islamabad Airport for your return flight home.

The ascent from Camp 2 to Camp 3 usually takes about 6 to 8 hours.

4. Camp 4 (7300m) - Situational:

The duration and necessity of Camp 4 are dependent on various factors and conditions.

5. From either Camp 3 or Camp 4 to G2 Summit (8035m):

Royalty Fee

Annually, the Gilgit-Baltistan Council releases an official notice detailing the royalty fees applicable for the forthcoming summer and winter climbing seasons. This information is accessible to the public and delineates specific charges for mountain access, trekking, waste disposal, and various regions during both seasons. To obtain the necessary permits, a deposit is required upfront. It's important to note that the permit fees, once paid to the Gilgit-Baltistan Government, are non-refundable. For further information, please reach out to us.

Hiring Additional Sherpa Assistance

We offer the provision of high-altitude climbers upon request. A high-altitude guide will assist by transporting your equipment on 'camp moving' days, allowing you to only carry essential items such as your jacket, water bottle, and necessary daily requirements. This service is favored by individuals who encounter challenges recuperating after carrying substantial loads at high altitudes.

Altitude

The Gasherbrum II Expedition entails reaching extremely high altitudes. Throughout your journey, you'll spend at least one night above 6,000 meters and/or trek to 5,000 meters or higher. While this shouldn't cause undue concern as the human body is adaptable to a wide range of altitudes, adhering to specific guidelines for successful acclimatization is crucial. We strongly recommend reviewing our website's advice on trekking at high altitude, accessible through the link below, before undertaking this holiday. If you lack prior experience climbing above 4,000 meters, consulting one of our climbing experts before embarking on this expedition is highly recommended.

In snowy conditions, both participants and porters will proceed together wearing crampons for safety, connected by ropes as an added precaution.

The ascent to the top of Gondogoro La Pass takes approximately 3 hours, revealing a breathtaking panorama of all four 8000ers in the Baltoro region: K2, G1, Broad Peak, and G2.

During the descent on the other side, full utilization of fixed ropes and the use of crampons are essential for safety. The stunning views of the beautiful sword-shaped Laila Peak (6,096m) and other trinity peaks unfold during the descent. Extra caution is required to avoid dislodging stones while descending, ensuring the safety of the team members. As the slope lessens, the trail becomes easier, leading onto the moraine. Our camp will be set up at Khuispang (4,600m), where Gondogoro and Trinity Glacier meet.

Post-lunch, the trek continues towards the Gondogoro Glacier's edge. Upon arrival, a trail unfolds, guiding the group to a picturesque valley adorned with rhubarb and grass.

At the valley's end, two different routes lead to the destination. Our guide, in consultation with local porters, will choose the most frequently used trail. As the two paths converge, the trek becomes simpler. Participants will encounter stone huts built by herders and local settlers, indicating human settlements in the area. The surroundings boast significant trees and lower altitudes, providing a more breathable atmosphere. Camp will be set up at Saicho (3,350m), featuring sandy patches with scant grass and streams of flowing glacier water.

Upon reaching Hushe village, participants will encounter two-story shelters where the ground floor accommodates cattle while the first floor serves as living quarters for families. After setting up camp, participants can explore the picturesque Hushe Valley and engage with the local community, marking the final camping day of the Gondogoro La Trek.

From Hushe, the journey to Skardu town offers scenic views of various small villages in the Hushe Valley. Crossing a suspension bridge above the Shyok River, originating from Ladakh, India, will be part of the route. Traditionally, goat skin rafts filled with air were used to cross the river, but a suspension bridge, constructed in the 1990s, now serves this purpose.

Subsequently, upon crossing the bridge, participants will reach Khaplu. The drive from Khaplu to Skardu is smooth, following a paved road alongside the Shayok River, leading to its confluence with the Indus River. Driving along the Indus River for about 4 hours will finally bring the participants to Skardu.

Gasherbrum II, situated in the Karakoram range, is considered one of the less technically challenging 8000-meter peaks. Our plan involves ascending via the south-west ridge, where fixed rope lines will be installed by our team up to the summit.

Our strategy entails utilizing Camps 1 through 4 along the standard route of the south-west ridge. For further details on our expedition strategy, please refer to the column above.

A typical climbing day ranges from 6 to 8 hours on average. Summit attempts tend to be the longest, involving a descent back to our selected camp (usually Camp 2 based on our overall progress).

Summit day on Gasherbrum I and II involves a direct ascent through the steep pyramid section. The climb predominantly traverses ice and snow terrains, typically commencing early in the day (morning) to reach the summit and return to Camp 2 or 1.

Prior high-altitude climbing experience, including multiple climbs above 6000 meters, at least one at 7000 meters, and proficiency in technical climbs.
Proficiency in abseiling, including multi-pitch abseiling experience, deemed crucial for the climb.
Competence in climbing diverse terrains like slab and vertical rocks, as well as navigating steep and challenging landscapes.
