Overview
The Spantik Basecamp Trek is one of the most spectacular high-altitude trekking adventures in Pakistan’s Karakoram. The trek takes you deep into a remote mountain wilderness beneath Spantik Peak (7,027 m), famously known as Golden Peak, and follows the dramatic landscapes of the Chogo Lungma Glacier.
Unlike the full Spantik Peak expedition, which continues from base camp toward the 7,027-meter summit, the Spantik Basecamp Trek is designed for trekkers who want to experience the magnificent Karakoram environment, glaciers, alpine landscapes and spectacular views of Spantik without undertaking a technical summit climb. Published trekking itineraries commonly place Spantik Base Camp around 4,300 m and describe the route as strenuous because of its remote terrain, altitude and glacier approach.
Starting from Skardu, the journey travels through the spectacular Shigar Valley before reaching Arandu, the last village on the approach. From Arandu, the trail enters a remote mountain environment and continues through summer pastures and glacial terrain toward Chogo Lungma and the Spantik Base Camp.
For adventure travelers searching for an authentic Spantik Basecamp Trek in Pakistan, this journey offers a rare combination of wilderness, high mountains, glaciers, local culture and unforgettable Karakoram scenery.
The Spantik Base Camp trek offers a outstanding trekking experience in the stunning Karakoram range of Pakistan. Situated near Spantik Peak, which stands at an impressive altitude of 7027 meters, this area was once a hidden gem but is now drawing the attention of thousands of adventure seekers. The appeal lies in its relatively low technical difficulty and straightforward approach. This trek provides a unique and exhilarating experience that sets it apart from others, and it’s conveniently just a few days away from Skardu City.
The adventure commences in Skardu, where Jeeps are at your service to transport you to Arando village in the Shigar Valley. The journey to Arando itself is an adventure, passing through the lush green valley of Shigar along the Basha River. Arando marks the last human settlement before embarking on the Spantik adventure. From here, the trek to Balocho camp involves meandering through pastures and rough terrain, with numerous 5,000 to 6,000-meter peaks gracing the surroundings. For the final two days of the trek, you’ll traverse glaciers en route to Spantik Base Camp.
What Is the Spantik Basecamp Trek?
The Spantik Basecamp Trek is a high-altitude trekking journey to the base camp of Spantik Peak, one of the iconic 7,000-meter mountains of the Karakoram.
Spantik rises to 7,027 meters (23,054 feet) and is also called Golden Peak because of the remarkable golden appearance the mountain can take under sunrise and sunset light. The mountain lies in the Karakoram of Gilgit-Baltistan and is approached through a remote glacier environment.
The basecamp trek provides an opportunity to experience the mountain without attempting the summit. You will travel through mountain villages, green summer pastures, rocky terrain and glacier landscapes before reaching the base camp beneath Spantik.
The approach is remote and physically demanding. There are no conventional tourist facilities along much of the trekking route, so trekkers travel with a supported camping and porter/crew system.
Arindo Valley
Arindo Valley in Shigar, Pakistan, is a lovely place surrounded by tall mountains and small streams. When the apricot trees blossom, the valley becomes colorful with beautiful pink and white flowers. The people who live here have houses made of stone and farms on stepped fields. They are very nice and happy to show visitors their way of life and traditions. If you go walking in the nearby mountains, you can see amazing views that will take your breath away. Arindo Valley is a peaceful and pretty area that lets you see the natural beauty and kindness of the locals, making it a special spot to visit.

Spantik Basecamp Trek Difficulty
The Spantik Basecamp Trek is strenuous.
It does not require the same technical climbing skills as a summit expedition, but trekkers need good physical fitness because of:
- Long trekking days
- High altitude
- Remote terrain
- Glacier and moraine travel
- Uneven rocky trails
- Cold temperatures
- Limited facilities
- Camping at altitude
- Changing mountain weather
Published trekking programs classify the trek as strenuous and commonly reach approximately 4,300 meters at base camp.
You should be comfortable walking for several hours a day on uneven mountain terrain.
Best Time for Spantik Basecamp Trek
The best period for the Spantik Basecamp Trek is generally the summer trekking season, particularly June through September.
Several published trekking and expedition programs identify June–September or June–August as the principal season for the Spantik region.
June
June marks the beginning of the main trekking season.
Advantages:
- Fresh mountain landscapes
- Lower number of trekkers
- Increasing accessibility of high-altitude routes
Conditions can still be cold, and snow conditions may affect the route.
July
July is one of the popular months for trekking and mountaineering in the Karakoram.
It can provide excellent conditions for a Spantik Basecamp Trek, subject to local weather and glacier conditions.
August
August is another popular month for Spantik expeditions and trekking.
The mountain environment is generally active during the summer season, but weather remains an important factor.
September
September can offer beautiful mountain conditions and fewer visitors compared with the peak summer period.
Weather can become colder as autumn progresses, so appropriate equipment is essential.
Altitude and Acclimatization
Altitude is a major consideration on the Spantik Basecamp Trek.
The base camp is approximately 4,200–4,300 meters above sea level, so your body needs time to adapt.
Common altitude-related symptoms can include:
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Difficulty sleeping
Never ignore serious symptoms.
If symptoms become severe or worsen, inform your guide immediately and follow professional medical advice. Descending to a lower altitude may be necessary.
