Climbing History

In 1976, British climber Joe Brown, along with Mo Anthoine, Martin Boysen, and Malcolm Howells, accomplished the first ascent of Trango (Nameless) Tower. This tower offers at least eight different routes to reach the summit.

In 1987, the second and third ascents were achieved with the opening of two new routes: the Yugoslav Route on the south-southeast face by Slavko Cankar, Franc Knez, and Bojan Šrot, and the Great Overhanging Dihedral Route on the western pillar by the Swiss/French team of Michel Fauquet, Patrick Delale, Michel Piola, and Stephane Schaffter.

In 1988, the Yugoslav Route was freed by the German team Kurt Albert, Wolfgang Güllich, and Hartmut Münchenbach, marking a significant milestone.

Another notable route, named Eternal Flame after a Bangles song, was first climbed in 1989 by Kurt Albert, Wolfgang Güllich, Milan Sykora, and Christoph Stiegler. This route, which ascends the South-East Face, was mostly climbed in a free style, ushering in a new era of high-altitude rock climbing.

Catherine Destivelle achieved the first female ascent of the Yugoslav Route in 1990 in free climbing style, with Jeff Lowe and David Breashears documenting the climb.

In the summer of 2009, Franz Hinterbrandner, Mario Walder, and Alexander and Thomas Huber accomplished the first free ascent of Eternal Flame.

Great Trango Tower – 6,286 m

Great Trango is the highest point of the Trango Towers group. Its enormous granite walls make it one of the most famous big-wall objectives in the Karakoram.

The famous pointed spire immediately northwest of Great Trango is generally known as Trango Tower or Nameless Tower. Its dramatic appearance and technical climbing history have made it one of the world’s best-known granite spires.

Trango Tower Expedition Route

A typical expedition begins in Islamabad, followed by the journey to Skardu. From Skardu, the team travels toward Askole, the traditional gateway for major Baltoro expeditions.

From Askole, the expedition enters the Baltoro region on foot. The approach passes through spectacular mountain landscapes before reaching the Trango area and the expedition base camp.
