Rush Lake Trek

The Rush Lake Trek offers a gentle adventure, perfect for those exploring the Karakoram Range for the first time. Situated at an elevation of 5098 meters, Rush Lake stands as one of the world's highest alpine lakes and holds the distinction of being Pakistan's highest lake.

The Rush Lake trek stands as the ultimate choice for avid trekkers, promising a truly rewarding experience filled with unparalleled natural beauty and enchanting vistas. Embarking on this adventure, you will not only find yourself immersed in the serene embrace of nature but also be invigorated with a sense of curiosity and excitement as you explore the surrounding landscapes. The trek bestows upon you a remarkable gift, the breathtaking sight of the awe-inspiring Rush Peak, standing tall at an impressive altitude of 5,098 meters.

Rush Lake is a pristine high-altitude body of water nestled in proximity to the towering Rush Pari peak. Rush Pari, a majestic summit, reaches a commanding height of 5,098 meters, while Rush Lake itself is perched at an elevation of 4,694 meters, solidifying its position as one of the world's loftiest lakes. This natural wonder is situated approximately 15 kilometers north of Miar Peak and the splendid Spantik Golden Peak, within the breathtaking Nagar Valley.

To reach Rush Lake and Rush Peak, adventurers have multiple entry points, including the Nagar and Hoper Valleys, as well as the awe-inspiring Hopper Glacier and Miar Glacier, both stemming from Miar Peak and the Phuparash peaks. The journey to Rush Lake is further enhanced by the panoramic presence of surrounding peaks like Spantik, Phuparash, Miar Peak, Malubiting, and Ultar SAR. On a clear day, it is even possible to catch a glimpse of the illustrious K2 Summit from the vantage point of Rush Lake, adding an extra layer of awe to this natural spectacle.

Rush Lake Treking

Rush Lake and Rush Peak are situated at a pivotal juncture along this ridge, marking the transition from a wide expanse to an intricate series of rugged, unscalable rock pinnacles. The Hunza region boasts a breathtaking panorama, with its towering peaks creating a truly spectacular scene. Across the Hispar Valley, there stands a formidable array of four peaks, ranging from 7,025 to 7,885 meters in height, forming an awe-inspiring natural wall.

For trekkers seeking a memorable adventure in the Hunza Valley, the Rush Lake trek is a guaranteed source of delight. The celebrated world traveler, Eric Shipton, once hailed the Hunza Valley as the ultimate embodiment of mountain magnificence. Our journey through this region also encompasses leisurely strolls to appreciate the unspoiled splendor of the surrounding valleys in Hunza.

We enthusiastically recommend the Rush Lake trek in the Hunza Valley, especially for those embarking on their inaugural Himalayan trekking experience. This trek promises the pleasure of encountering glaciers, picturesque irrigated fields, and elevated meadows, all while delivering a truly spectacular vista of the formidable Karakoram Mountains, which you can behold from Rush Lake. Imagine Karakoram Tours offers an opportunity to explore this extraordinary destination.

Details Itinerary

Day 1 Islamabad:
Your journey begins with a warm welcome from the HunzaAdventure Tours team at Islamabad International Airport. We will assist you with your luggage and transport you to a centrally located hotel in Islamabad.

Day 2 Islamabad – Chilas:
Today, we embark on a drive to Chilas along the scenic Karakorum Highway. Along the way, we'll make a stop at the Shatial rock carving, a historical site. Afterward, we continue our journey to Chilas and check in at the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 3 Chilas – Karimabad Hunza:
After breakfast, we set off for Karimabad Hunza. En route, we'll pause at the junction point of three magnificent mountain ranges that converge at one spot. We'll also take a lunch break at the Rakaposhi viewpoint, offering stunning vistas. Finally, we reach Karimabad Hunza, check in at our hotel, and enjoy an overnight stay.

Day 4 Karimabad Hunza – Hopper Valley:
Today's exploration takes us to the Baltit and Altit forts. Afterward, we embark on a short trek along the Barbar water channel, which provides irrigation for fields and households. This trek rewards us with breathtaking views of Diran Peak, Golden Peak, and Rakaposhi. In the afternoon, we head to Hoper Nagar through an exciting 100-minute jeep journey across the picturesque Hunza and Nagar valleys. We stay in a modest lodge on the outskirts of the village.

Day 5 Hopper Valley – Barpo Giram:
Leaving Hopar behind, we cross the Bualter Glacier and trek on the grassy hillside above the Barpu Glacier. After about 4 hours, we arrive at the small shepherd's settlement of Hapukun, followed by Hamdar. Crossing the Bualter Glacier (which may take 4 to 5 hours, depending on the route), we reach our campsite nestled between the Bualter and Barpu Glaciers at 3000 meters. We'll spend the night camping at Barpo Giram.

Day 6 Barpo Giram – Brikchour:
Crossing the Barpu Glacier is relatively easier than the Bualter, and we walk through an ablation valley of the Barpu. We'll enjoy a lunch break at the shepherd's settlement of Chukutans, which marks the beginning of a much-improved path leading to Brikchour. After approximately 5 hours of trekking, we reach the Brikchour campsite, with stunning views of Ultar, Diran, and Spantik peaks. Camping overnight at Brikchour.

Day 7 Brikchour – Rush Lake:
Today, we face a challenging, steep climb. The trail ascends in a series of zigzags behind the camp, gaining 700 meters along a dry and dusty path. This path leads to the crest of the ridge that separates the Barpu Glacier valley from the Hispar Glacier to the north. The trail then turns southwards and follows the broad crest of this ridge for another 350 meters, leading to the Chiden Haral campsite. This hike takes about 6 hours and offers outstanding views of the peaks above the Hispar Glacier. You'll spend the night camping at Rush Lake.

Day 8 Rush Lake – Rush Peak Ascent (5095m):
Today, an early start is essential for our peak ascent, allowing for clear skies and the best views of distant peaks. With favorable conditions, we should reach the summit in about 3-4 hours. The trail is relatively easy for most of the way, ascending grass-covered slopes and passing along the shores of Rush Lake. The most challenging section is the final 150-meter climb of the summit cone, which should be approached with care. You'll spend the night camping at Rush Lake.

Day 9 Rush Lake – Gutons:
The morning is free for excursions, photography, nature watching, and hiking. In the afternoon, we'll begin our descent along the same path we ascended earlier. The terrain is steep and dusty, as the path is very direct, dropping 900 meters over a short distance. This descent will take 3-4 hours, and you'll stay overnight in Gutons.

Day 10 Gutons – Hoppar – Gulmit:
Today, we walk on the east side of the Barpu Glacier, a different route from when we initially ascended to Rush Lake. Along the way, we'll pass several large flat grassland areas surrounded by trees. The route follows the ablation valley on the east side of the Barpu Glacier. After approximately 4 hours of trekking, we return to Hoper village, crossing the challenging Bualter Glacier and a final steep climb up a moraine. After lunch, we'll depart for Gulmit, making a stop at Attabad Lake on our way. Upon arrival in Gulmit, you'll check in at the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 11 Passu – Borith – Suspension Bridges:
This day is filled with fascinating experiences. We'll begin by driving to Hussaini Village, where we'll visit the Hussaini suspension bridges. Next, we'll drive up to Upper Borith and take a short walk to the viewpoint overlooking Passu Glacier. After that, we'll drive to Passu village and have a village tour. Following the tour, we'll return to Gulmit for an overnight stay in Upper Hunza Valley.

Day 12 Excursion – Khunjerab Pass:
Today, we embark on a full-day excursion to Khunjerab Pass, which serves as the border between Pakistan and China. Khunjerab Pass is the highest point on the Karakoram Highway, sitting at an altitude of 4733 meters. This route offers a scenic drive with spectacular views of the Karakoram and distant Pamir mountain ranges. At Khunjerab, now a national park, you may spot wildlife such as Marco Polo Sheep, Snow leopards, and Himalayan Ibexes. In the evening, we'll return to the hotel, making stops at Borith Lake and the Hussaini Suspension bridges on the way. You'll spend the night in Gulmit, Upper Hunza Valley.

Day 13 Gilgit – Islamabad – Besham:
Today, we depart for Islamabad via a scenic flight. In the event of unfavorable weather conditions, we'll travel on the Karakoram Highway to Besham, offering captivating landscapes. Along the way, you'll witness towering, snow-capped mountains rising from deep valleys and lush alpine meadows adorned with colorful wildflowers and apple blossoms. The route is dotted with terraced villages, preserving traditional farming methods and lifestyles that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Upon arrival in Besham, you'll check in at the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 14 Besham – Islamabad:
We continue our journey with a drive to Islamabad, making a stop to visit the Taxila museum along the way. In Islamabad, we'll explore key landmarks, including the Shah Faisal Mosque, Pakistan Monument, and Daman-e-Koh. The day concludes with a farewell dinner party, and we'll drop you off at the airport for your return flight home.
