Spantik Basecamp Trek

The Spantik Base Camp trek offers a outstanding trekking experience in the stunning Karakoram range of Pakistan. Situated near Spantik Peak, which stands at an impressive altitude of 7027 meters, this area was once a hidden gem but is now drawing the attention of thousands of adventure seekers. The appeal lies in its relatively low technical difficulty and straightforward approach. This trek provides a unique and exhilarating experience that sets it apart from others, and it's conveniently just a few days away from Skardu City.

The 15-day Spantik Base Camp trek, organized from the Shigar side of the Spantik face, takes you to a less crowded region of the Karakoram. This allows trekkers to savor the untamed beauty of the Karakoram wilderness. The trek offers a moderate terrain with a slight incline as you approach Spantik Base Camp. The trail combines glaciers and verdant pastures, surrounded by majestic snow-capped rock and ice peaks.

The adventure commences in Skardu, where  Jeeps are at your service to transport you to Arando village in the Shigar Valley. The journey to Arando itself is an adventure, passing through the lush green valley of Shigar along the Basha River. Arando marks the last human settlement before embarking on the Spantik adventure. From here, the trek to Balocho camp involves meandering through pastures and rough terrain, with numerous 5,000 to 6,000-meter peaks gracing the surroundings. For the final two days of the trek, you'll traverse glaciers en route to Spantik Base Camp.

Spantik Peak Base Camp is a popular haven for mountain enthusiasts nestled in the heart of the Karakoram. The peak straddles the border of Shigar and Nagar valleys in Gilgit Baltistan. Spantik goes by different names from both sides, each reflecting the mountain's beauty, grandeur, and wilderness. The northwestern face, known as "Ghinesh" in Brushaski language, translates to "Golden Mountain" or "Queen." This side is more commonly referred to as "Golden Peak." The original name, Spantik, is predominantly used for the southeastern face from Shigar Valley. "Span-Tik" is a Balti language term signifying "High Altitude Pasture." Spantik Base Camp treks and expeditions are typically initiated from Shigar Valley due to its accessibility and relatively easy terrain.

Arindo Valley

Arindo Valley in Shigar, Pakistan, is a lovely place surrounded by tall mountains and small streams. When the apricot trees blossom, the valley becomes colorful with beautiful pink and white flowers. The people who live here have houses made of stone and farms on stepped fields. They are very nice and happy to show visitors their way of life and traditions. If you go walking in the nearby mountains, you can see amazing views that will take your breath away. Arindo Valley is a peaceful and pretty area that lets you see the natural beauty and kindness of the locals, making it a special spot to visit.

Trip Itinerary

Day 01 (Exclusive for Foreign Guests):
On the first day of the Spantik Base Camp trip, our team will meet you at Islamabad Airport and take you to the hotel. Look for our staff holding our company card at the airport when you arrive. Remember to give us your flight details 3 to 4 days before you come. Our team will then drive you to a hotel near Margalla hills in Islamabad. At the hotel, you'll share a room with someone else. You'll get breakfast, lunch, and dinner there too. After resting a bit, if you arrive late, you'll pay your fees and get a briefing in Skardu.

Day 02:
On the second day of the Spantik Base Camp Trek, we'll take a morning flight to Skardu. Skardu is an important place for expeditions and trekking in the Karakoram range. The flight from Islamabad to Skardu offers amazing views of the Himalayas and Karakoram mountains, and you might see Nanga Parbat and other tall peaks. When we arrive in Skardu, our team member will be at the airport to take us to the hotel. If we get there early, we'll have time to rest and maybe visit the local market and areas around Skardu city.

Day 03:
Skardu is a town in the mountains near the Indus River, and it's all surrounded by big mountains. After breakfast, we'll look at our gear and clothes for the Spantik Base Camp Trek. If we need anything, we'll buy or rent it in Skardu. When we're all set with our stuff, we'll take a short hike to Kharpocho and the old castle, which is not too far from Skardu's markets. The castle has an amazing view of the Indus River, Skardu town, and the area around it.

Day 04:

Early in the morning, we'll head to Arando, the last village before Spantik peak in Shigar Valley. Our crew and supplies will go with us in a jeep. It takes about 5-7 hours to drive from Skardu to Arando. After driving for about half an hour from Skardu, we'll enter Shigar Valley, home to the world's second-highest peak, K2. We'll pass through green fields along the Shigar River. As we go further, the valley gets narrower until we reach Arando by driving alongside the Basha River.

After driving for about 3 hours from Skardu, we'll reach Chutron Village, where there's a hot spring. We'll take a bath there, have lunch, and then continue our journey to Arando, which is about a 2-3 hours' drive from the hot spring. In Arando, our porters, climbing assistants, and kitchen crew will join us. They'll guide us to the Spantik Base Camp. Our team will set up tents, and we'll be welcomed with a hot cup of tea, cookies, and snacks. Dinner will be served in our dining tent, and we'll spend the night camping in a fully equipped campsite.

Day 05:

On the first day of the Spantik Base Camp Trek, we'll begin our hike from Arindo village. The trail follows a green path along the glacier and leads through grassy fields until we reach ChogoBrangsa. ChogoBrangsa is a summer pasture, which means a "Huge Lodge." The trek to ChogoBrangsa from Arindo village usually takes about 6 to 8 hours.

During the trek, you might encounter shepherds and miners on the way to Spantik peak. The total distance covered on this day of the Spantik Base Camp Trek is approximately 14 kilometers, and there's an ascent of about 900 meters in altitude.

It usually takes about 5 to 7 hours to reach Balocho from Chogobrangsa, covering a total distance of around 13-14 kilometers. During this part of the Spantik Base Camp Trek, participants might catch their first view of the Spantik Peak from the campsite. We'll spend the night at Balocho camp.

The ideal time for the Spantik Base Camp Trek is during the summer months, from July to the end of September. This period offers milder weather, clear skies, and manageable trekking conditions. It's essential to avoid the harsh winter season due to extreme cold and snow-covered trails.

While prior trekking experience is beneficial, the Spantik Base Camp Trek is suitable for a wide range of trekkers, including beginners. It's considered a moderately challenging trek with manageable technicality. However, participants should be in good physical condition and prepared for the rigors of trekking at higher altitudes.

Accommodations during the trek typically consist of camping in tents. You'll stay in dome tents, usually shared by 2-3 people, and these tents come equipped with comfortable mattresses. Please note that the level of accommodation may be basic in remote areas, and facilities like hotels are limited. It's essential to be prepared for camping and self-sufficiency during the trek.
